My Journey…My Passion

HOW I BEGAN.png

Have you ever had to decide that you would cut off a piece of your body to prevent the disease from spreading and taking your life?  In many cases, that’s what a cancer patient has to decide to do. That’s the decision that I had to make. Not once, but twice. And I still don’t know if before I cut off that piece of my body, in this case, my breasts if the cancer was just one step ahead of me and jumped to another part of my body and will rear its ugly head one more time in the future. Can you imagine that life, the life that I am living?

Despite the reality of my situation I choose to live a full life. A life that acknowledges and celebrates the work that I have done and have yet to do. I have held leadership roles in the nonprofit sector over a 30-year career with KQED Public Broadcasting, Bay Area Black United Fund, United Negro College Fund, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and ADRA International. My volunteer work includes leading mission trips to support vulnerable populations to provide hope and resources during their time of need while a ministry leader in my home church. I am currently serving as a member of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women Metropolitan DC Chapter to empower Black women and girls towards financial stability and as a member of the Cancer Support Center DC - Community Engagement Advisory Council as they build a new facility to provide resources for support and treatment to those affected by cancer in Metro DC. As an entrepreneur, I created and developed the first African American women-owned art gallery in the Pacific Northwest and am now a top producing Realtor in the Metro DC market. I am a mother, grandmother, sister, mentor, and friend.

I have been a breast cancer patient, a survivor, and an advocate for a major part of my life while continuing to grow and thrive professionally. I refuse to let breast cancer win and continue to push through to inform, educate and advocate for women and families affected by the disease.

I am a quiet warrior that focuses on the beauty of a life worth living and a purpose worth fighting for!

I belong to many groups that share challenges women fighting breast cancer and those who have completed treatment are experiencing. Through my exchange, I learn so much and we end up supporting each other. If you need someone to talk to, I am totally available to you. I am not a therapist, but a listening ear when writing about it just won’t do!
